FIRST PLACE


       smell of rain
       the sidewalk darkens
       drop by drop

SECOND PLACE


      dandelions
      that crack in the pavement
      still growing

     autumn chill
     a small stone
     sits in a hopscotch square

              autumn equinox
              crossing over
              to the sunny sidewalk

      the smell of rain --
      wetness spreading slowly
      across the pavement

                    sidewalk hot dog vendor
                    heavy on the mustard
